NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and her crew are getting ready for a special Thanksgiving aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Even though they are far from Earth, they will still have a festive meal in space to keep the holiday tradition alive.
Thanksgiving in Space
Williams said their meal will include smoked turkey, cranberry sauce, apple cobbler, green beans, mushrooms, and mashed potatoes. All the food is made for space. The crew will also watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade while working on their mission.
Crew Health and Well-being
Williams shared that the crew stays healthy by exercising and eating right. Mission control makes sure they are okay. They also have plans if they need to come back to Earth early.
Thanksgiving in Space: A NASA Tradition
This is the third time astronauts Barry Wilmore and Donald Pettit are celebrating Thanksgiving in space. In 2008, during another mission, they had a similar meal. Williams and her crew continue this tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving in space.
Helping NASA's Future Goals
The crew is working on NASA’s Artemis program. This program aims to send astronauts back to the Moon and eventually to Mars. The astronauts do experiments and test new technology to help future space travel.
Overcoming Challenges in Space
There were problems with their spacecraft, like issues with thrusters. However, Williams assured everyone that the crew is safe and has help from mission control.
Their hard work shows how committed they are to their mission.
This Thanksgiving in space reminds us of how astronauts continue to work hard to make space travel possible for future missions to the Moon and Mars.
